You know it's summer when...

the drive-in is open.

Yep folks, one great thing about where we live is the fact that we can still take in a double feature at the drive-in outside of Columbia Falls for $10 a carload.

I loved the drive-in as a kid. We would put on our pajamas, grab a pillow and blanket and a fill paper grocery sack full of popcorn before loading into the car. If the weather was good, we could sit on top of the car or in lawn chairs. In Billings there was a huge section of land that had several screens going at once. If you were bored with one movie, you could look out your window at another. Of course that land is all developed now. I think there is even a Krispy Kremes where one of the screens used to stand. (Billings bloggers please add your two cents here.)

The first movie I ever saw at the drive-in was Grease. And if there was ever a movie made for the drive-in experience, it was Grease. In high school, the drive-in was just a place to park your cars while you hung out with everyone for awhile.

And now it is a family affair. Last year we took our kids to their first drive-in movie. They had a blast! They didn't believe us when we told them they could wear pajamas to the movies. They were amazed that the sound came thru the radio. And they loved the fact that we could put down all the seats in the back of the SUV and "camp out" while taking in films like Spiderman 2 and Shrek 2.

Drive-ins are becoming extinct. I don't know how much longer this one will be around either. But for now, we're glad it's here.

I was pretty bummed when they tore the last drive in by my house (in Ca) down a few years ago. Then my husband and I moved to TN and there was one there. We went to a few movies while we were there and it was so much fun. I missed the ones we used to have out here. It brought back a lot of memories.

That's one of the things that I have promised myself that I will take my kids to the next time I am back in Canada. They've never been to one since alas, drive-ins seem to only exist in North America.

Wow you're very lucky to have a drive-in to go to.

I'm not sure my kids would enjoy it - but I know I sure would!

I hope they don't become extinct. I sure hope not.

Hope you're having a great weekend!

My 7-year-old daughter loves the drive-in. There is something about going out in your pajamas.

We used to hit the drive-ins in NY our pjs, too. But Grease?! Thanks for making me feel ancient, lady!

I grew up in Hamilton. It really didn't phase me much when they tore down the drive-in there, but as I've grown older and since moved to California and live near a drive-in now, I appreciate the essence of the drive-in more. Too bad that Mildenberger Motors was more important than a local Drive-In in good ol Hamilton.

After we paid for our kids traditional summer camp we found it tough to recover! I totally agree with you!
